New Year's Resolution: 500 Words a Day
Jan. 1st, 2011 12:24 pmNow: Resolutions
On Deck: Dell Awards
One of the most common pieces of writing advice is to write every day. It’s advice that I’m always meaning to take to heart. I actually did manage to write every day for about a month between September and October, and I loved it - up until I stumbled.
That experiment is the inspiration for my New Year’s resolution: to write a minimum of 500 words every day. Plus, on the first of each month, I’ll be increasing by daily word goal by 42. Other than being an awesome number, it has the purpose of bringing me to 1004 words a day on January 1st, 2011. (Hint: One of my resolutions for 2011 is to write 1000 words a day.)
A related resolution: to not let NaNoWriMo de-rail my daily word goal. That was my problem this year. After a month of frantic writing, I convinced myself that I deserved a break. A day! All I wanted was a day. But a day turned into two, into three, into a week, until I had to start writing for a class and then for the Dell Awards.
In case you’re wondering, I use the iPod Touch app “WriteChain” to keep track of how I’m doing, and I write in Scrivener (which I will be writing about for Monday). For an extra touch of accountability, I’ll be using Fridays to do a Weekly Scoresheet, where I’ll give you my daily tallies and some little notes about how it’s going, how I’ve been keeping myself motivated, and any helpful tools I find along the way.
I also have a couple of extra resolutions. I want to keep track of the books I read, as I said yesterday. On the generic resolutions side, I want to eat healthier, lose weight, be an all-around better person, etc.
What about you? What are your resolutions? Anyone joining me in the vow to write every day?
